Hebrews 6: 7 – 12 (Better things from YOU)
Dr. James Sutton II
(Heb 6:7) For land that has drunk the rain that often falls on it, and produces a crop useful to those for whose sake it is cultivated, receives a blessing from God.
(Heb 6:8) But if it bears thorns and thistles, it is worthless and near to being cursed, and its end is to be burned.
(Heb 6:9) Though we speak in this way, yet in your case, beloved, we feel sure of better things—things that belong to salvation.
(Heb 6:10) For God is not unjust so as to overlook your work and the love that you have shown for his name in serving the saints, as you still do.
(Heb 6:11) And we desire each one of you to show the same earnestness to have the full assurance of hope until the end,
(Heb 6:12) so that you may not be sluggish, but imitators of those who through faith and patience inherit the promises.
( Growing Up to Glory)
At this time it is necessary to do a little review on the ground we have covered moving towards maturity. We agree that Jesus is better than everything and every system of religion including Judaism. Specificly Jesus is better than the Angels, Moses and all the patriarchs that came before him. Jesus represents the manifestation of the types and shadows from the Old Testament. Jesus is the entire word of the Old Testament becoming flesh. (John 1:14)
The letter to the Hebrews are to three types of Jews, newly converted Jews under persecution, nonbelieving Jews that have had access and knowledge of Jesus Christ and finally nonbelievers. Obviously the group that is in the most danger is the nonbelieving. The writer of Hebrews clearly articulates the worst condition, being those who have tasted the heavenly gift and been partakers in the faith. Even though this was written to Jews it can apply to the church today. If we just taste the gospel and do not digest it our hearts will become calloused and our ears will become dull of hearing. We will end up being immature in spiritual matters, becoming selfish and obstructive to those who are trying to eat and digest and grow up. Some have been exposed to the oracles of God since their birth and have grown up in God-fearing homes, with God-fearing practices. Believing that the rituals and sacrifices of the Old Testament are sufficient for salvation disregarding the provision by Jesus. This state of mind continues to allow them to stay babies and rely on their outward works that do not do anything. To hold onto those rituals is actually blaspheming God the father, son and Holy Spirit. Rejecting the provision, power and purpose for Jesus birth, death and resurrection.
There are many reasons why we like to hold on to the past. One of the reasons is that most of our friends and family members are stuck there. You can tell when your family members are stuck in the past when they only relate to you in reference to who you used to be and not who you have become. Wouldn’t it be wonderful for your family members and friends to see in you that God of your salvation. The hard part is you can only plant the seed to some and water others but God through the Holy Spirit has to convict them. That’s why in Hebrews 6:7-8 the same rain represents the word given through the Holy Spirit by me and, falls on everyone. Some produce fruit and others rejected and produce thorns. I want to point out at this time there’s two types of rejections. One is the complete rejection of the gospel that leads to damnation. The other rejection retards growth by causing you to staying a baby but you want to be recognized as mature. They are unskilled and need to be taught the oracles of the Old Testament and its shadows and types before moving on to salvation through Jesus. If their leaders their sermons and classes are more psychological, sociological and tribal. They appeal to your base emotions and thoughts. Always remember this relationship with Jesus and understanding the better things that he has for you is not based upon your understanding of man other than he is ultimately doomed without Christ.
In verse 9 the writer gives hope in the active work of the Holy Spirit upon those believers who want to become mature. Maturity comes with a cost and some of you might not be willing to pay. Let us look at (Matthew 19:29, Mark 10:29) are you willing to be the trailblazer for your family and break the curse of Satan and his world system. Wanting to stop having an outward appearance of holiness and peace through dead works versus having confidence in the kingdom to come no matter what is happening to you here on earth. (Romans 10:1-3). It is great to know that God will give you the desires of your heart and growing up to maturity is awesome. The purpose for the fivefold ministry is to mature yourself so that you may edify the complete body of Christ. Everyone will mature and some will produce more fruit than others, but no fruit (thorns thistles and weeds) is not acceptable or profitable. (Ephesians 4:11-12)
One of the ways we demonstrate our maturity is growing up with love to serve one another (Saints). God wants you to know that he is not ignoring how mature you act by helping each other. You should not be concerned with the rewards on earth that you do not receive, but obtaining a better reward in heaven that is incorruptible. We thank God when we serve each other and build up the body as needed God will reward us here on earth but the balance of our reward is being secured by him. Even if you are rewarded on earth with the manifestation of natural gain it will eventually be taken away from you one way or another, but what’s in heaven is eternal and growing.
1 Corinthians 16:17 says let everything you do be done in love. Love is a mature concept that can only be appreciated by the power of the Holy Spirit. Love produces a feeling, but it is not an emotion. Love is action and giving of oneself for the betterment of the others (John 3:16-17). To reduce the frequency of you planting seeds of discord in people you need to first grow up and become mature, having the power to discern what is good and evil. The only place you can receive this knowledge is through the word of God and a disciplined lifestyle full of prayer.
To lay hold to the better promises of God depend solely and completely upon your ability and desire to become mature. Without maturity you may continue to be a baby and have no fruit in your own personal life and in the body of Christ. Again I say, some of you ought to be teachers by now and some of you need to stop teaching and go back to the simple oracles of God, starting over again.
